Egyptian Faience Bead Necklace With Amulet of Bes

Item Description

C. 1570-30 BC – New Kingdom to Ptolemaic Period

A restrung Egyptian necklace consisting of a selection of blue faience tubular beads, with small flattened discs in red, blue, yellow, black and green between. To the centre of the necklace there is a flat, blue faience amulet of the god Bes playing the tambourine, with suspension loop attached to the top. Bes appears to be dancing with his knees bent, arms raised to one side playing the tambourine, and a curled tail.

Faience is a glazed ceramic, produced from quartz or sand crystals mixed with other compounds. It produces vibrant colours and is finished with an alkaline glaze to surface. The Egyptians believe faience represents immortality and rebirth.

A beautifully restrung, wearable necklace with a modern silver plated, screw clasp and vibrant coloured beads.
