Egyptian Faience Amulet of Sky Goddess Nut As Sow

Item Description

C. 1086–664 BC – Third Intermediate Period to Late

A pale blue glazed faience amulet of the sky goddess Nut, mother of the stars, with attachment loop affixed to Nut’s back. It has a large body, stumpy legs, with its head bent down to the floor. Nut took the form of a sow, who gave birth to and demolished the sun each day.

Small chip to on leg and suspension loop hole with some deposits, otherwise intact and in good condition.

Provenance: Thomas Allworthy (died 1973) thence by decent to the last owner. Allworthy was a collector of antiquity who sold a small number of pieces at Sotheby’s 19th May 1956.
