Egyptian Faience Amulet of Thoth

Item Description

C. 522–343 BC – 26th-30th Dynasty – Late Period

A small, dark green glazed faience amulet of Thoth, depicted as a man wearing a short kilt, with an ibis-head. He was believed to have healing powers and was the deity of knowledge and writing. Such amulets were used by the living and were often placed on mummies as well.

Slight pitted surfaces with a nice glaze and very good condition. Mounted on a detachable wooden stand.

Provenance: Thomas Allworthy (died 1973) thence by decent to the last owner. Allworthy was a collector of antiquity who sold a small number of pieces at Sotheby’s 19th May 1956.
