C. 713-332 BC – Late Period

A light blue glazed faience amulet of the Egyptian deity Anubis, depicted striding with his left leg forward, as he keeps his elongated arms stiff at his sides. He wears a pleated loincloth and has bands around his arms.

The god of the dead and the process of embalming and associated with the afterlife. Anubis brought souls into the afterlife and would be present during the weighing of the heart ceremony which determined whether a soul would be allowed to enter the realm of the dead.

Some light earthy surface deposits with a nice glaze and very good condition.

Provenance: Thomas Allworthy (died 1973) thence by decent to the last owner. Allworthy was a collector of antiquity who sold a small number of pieces oat Sotheby’s 19th May 1956.
