C. 1st-2nd century AD

An interesting example of a Roman green glass bottle, with a round body depicting two identical heads of the Roman god Janus. with curly hair. It has a long cylindrical neck leading to a flared rim. Janus was not only one of the oldest gods and most important, but he was known as the god of beginnings, and is depicted with two faces as he looks towards both the future and the past.

Although damaged and repaired, it is a rare piece with good detail and a nice iridescence.

Provenance: Deceased Estate of an East Anglian school teacher who later retired to the Isle of Wight. A keen collector and antiquarian who amassed a collection between the 1960’s-1980’s.
