Medieval Glazed Bellarmine Stoneware Jug

Item Description

C. 15h-16th Century

A single handle, brown glazed, stoneware bellarmine jug, decorated with a bearded facemask to the neck.

Stoneware jugs made ideal long-term storage containers as they are fired at a higher temperature than earthenware, making it hot enough to change the clay into a glasslike substance, resulting in a nonporous ceramic body.

Patches in the glaze done in manufacture. Chips to base edge otherwise fine detail and good example.
