Item Description

C. 4th century BC

A beautiful black-glazed terracotta guttus with vertical ribs around the perimeter and a single loop handle at a right angle to the high angled spout. Decorated with the head of Poseidon, god of the sea, depicted with a long beard on the upper centre of the reservoir within a concentric circle. A guttus was used to store precious oil to fill oil lamps.

Slightly chipped glaze with chip to base rim, otherwise good detail and of a very large size.
